Skillset Media Academy
The NTI in Birmingham is part of Birmingham City University which has been awarded Skillset Media Academy status for its excellence in media skills training and education and its close working relationship with the media industry. The excellent training and support available through the NTI in Birmingham was recognised an important factor in achieving this award.
The University was formally recognised at a prestigious ceremony at the Café Royal in London on Thursday 13th December. The Award was handed to the University’s Vice Chancellor Professor David Tidmarsh by former BBC Director General Greg Dyke and Culture Secretary James Parnell. The Secretary of State emphasised the importance of media education to the UK’s knowledge economy.
Skillset, the body responsible for developing skills and talent for the UK audio-visual media industries, identified Birmingham City University as the only centre of excellence in the region between the Severn and Mersey. The University will now form part of a small network of similar institutions across the rest of the country to develop innovation and good practice in teaching and learning for the media sector.
Professor Tidmarsh said: ‘The award of Media Academy status is a major vote of confidence by media industries in the University’s ability to produce the skills and talents that they need. It’s also a strong endorsement of our plans to work closely with the media to meet future challenges, especially in postgraduate and professional skills development.’
